Culmination not aberration

The party of Mitt Romney is dead.  It was unceremoniously and quickly murdered.  I'm reminds me of Dune, the Bene Gesserit create zealots to support and sustain their cause, but Paul Atriedes came along and exploited those zealots to seek personal revenge and in the process turned them against the Bene Gesserit who created them.

As the Republican party has shifted from the progressive party under Theodore Roosevelt to the Conservative party now lead by Donald Trump it has made some great changes.  The Republican party became the conservative party soon after TR and his supporters left to create the Progressive party. Originally as the conservative party they simply pushed for less regulation of big businesses.  Then as the Democratic party expand it's Progressive platform under Franklin Roosevelt, and eventually taking a strong stance on civil liberties for blacks under Truman and Johnson, the Republican party saw an influx of racists looking for a new home.  By the 1970's stalwart racists like Strom Thurmond had switched to the Republican party.

As mass media and most new organization have embraced equality and man made climate change the conservative movement has had to turn their supporters against these organizations. Thus began the campaign against "mainstream media"   Even local news sources owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints need to be discredited.. This of course have made these people completely dependent on Republican politicians and their supporters for news.  Church issued press releases can not convince many LDS Republicans that Trump was separating families at the border. While many LDS Republican recognize the truth of families being separated and oppose it, they are still planning on voting for Trump.  Because they believe that the Republican party will reign in spending, despite a Republican president having never reduced spending. They believe Republican politicians are better with the economy(after all look at post pandemic inflation, never mind 2007-2008). The main reason they believe the Republicans are better with the economy is they believe Democrats get elected by promising people in big cities(this means minorities) that they will never have to work. This is what I was told when I was young.  Conservatives have been convinced that Christianity is about sexual behaviors not charitable behaviors.

All of these things have led to the modern Republican party.  What is happening in the party today is not an aberration, it is the culmination of decades of effort to indoctrinate Republican members into selfish short sighted behavior. I've seen my ward organize *against* a homeless shelter. I've had my Elder's Quorum instructor use a conference talk to teach sensitivity towards racism is irrational, despite the talk saying the opposite. My stake President called our first Black President a socialist. Fellow Sunday school participants have called global warming "a lie that Satan tells us".

Then Trump came a long and took it "too far" for most members of the church.  They want to go back to the party of Romney.  They believe that will happen.

Senator Romney is refusing to endorse Vice President Harris in hopes that he can retain some power in the party.  There are a few problems with that.

  1. The Republican party will never again accept that they have lost a race.  Therefor there is no reason to adapt.
  2. The Republican party doesn't like him.
  3. All the other party leaders that were like him, have left.

The party is not going back.  All party leaders will continue to try to prove who is the most extreme conservative. Whether it's Governor DeSantis putting ministers in schools. Governor Cox outlawing diversity programs. Phil Lyman denying election losses. Or Senator Vance claiming immigrants are eating pets. The racism, the hate, the extremism is the only way to win a Republican primary.  The zealots have realized their power, and they are not giving it back. Trumps rants, are only an aberration in their incoherence and crudeness. The racism, the sexism, the cruelty, and the dishonesty have all long been a key part of the Republican party.  The next leader of the Republican party will not be as crass, he will be faithful to his wife, but he will be cruel, hateful, and extreme.
